Adjusting My View: How I Found Success in Insurance
The Original Plan
Success isn’t always what we think it is. When I started my journey in insurance, I thought I knew exactly what success looked like. But over time, I discovered that it's less about reaching a particular destination and more about how your career feels along the way, shifting as life changes.
The Early Days: Climbing the Ladder
When I first entered the insurance world, my idea of success was pretty straightforward: climb the corporate ladder as quickly as possible. I wanted the titles, the promotions, and the recognition that came with them. I dreamed of the corner office and the sense of achievement that came with being “at the top.”
But as I moved forward, checking off milestones and climbing higher, something started to shift. Despite reaching many of the goals I had set, I found myself questioning whether I felt truly successful.
The Reality Check: A New Perspective
As my career progressed, the desire to keep pushing for the next big title didn’t disappear – but my priorities began to change. I realized that success wasn’t just about the job title or recognition. It was about how my career made me feel – fulfilled, balanced, and aligned with the life I wanted to live. It was about having a career that worked with my life, not against it.
That’s one of the reasons I believe a career in insurance is such a great fit for women. It offers the flexibility and opportunities to carve out a path that suits different stages of life, whether you’re raising a family, pursuing personal passions, or seeking growth in your professional journey. It’s an industry where you can adapt, evolve, and truly define your own version of success.
Embracing My Own Definition of Success
This shift in perspective is what led me to create The Risk Chicks – a platform where women in insurance can find energy, insight, and a bit of sparkle as they navigate their own careers. My mission is to help women feel confident in defining their path, to bring a touch of authenticity and wit to an industry that often feels rigid, and to support women in embracing success in a way that feels right for them.
You don’t have to follow the traditional path to feel successful. Sometimes, success is simply having the freedom to define your own path and feel good about it, no matter where it leads.
Your Turn: What Does Success Feel Like for You?
When we define success as a feeling, not a destination, you might just realize you’re already where you want to be.
